Tamil Nadu Civil Judge eligibility

​

Eligibility Criteria:

Citizenship:Must be a citizen of India.
 

Age Limit (as on 01.07.2023):
 

  • For Practising Advocates/Pleaders and Assistant Public Prosecutors:

    • Minimum Age: 25 years.

    • Maximum Age: For SCs, SC(A)s, STs, MBCs/DCs, BCs, BCMs, and Destitute Widows of all castes: 42 years.

    • For Others: 37 years.
       

  • For Fresh Law Graduates:

    • Minimum Age: 22 years.

    • Maximum Age: 29 years.
       

Educational Qualification:

  • For Practising Advocates/Pleaders and APP:

    • Must possess a Degree in Law from a recognized University in India and be enrolled in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu or any other state in India.

    • Must have practiced as an Advocate or Pleader in any Court for at least 3 years on the date of the notification.
       

  • For Fresh Law Graduates:

    • Must possess a Degree in Law from a recognized University.

    • Must be eligible to be enrolled as an Advocate.

    • Must have secured an overall percentage of:

      • 45% for reserved categories (SCs, SC(A)s, STs, MBCs/DCs, BCs, and BCMs).

      • 50% for open category (Others).

    • Must have obtained the Bachelor’s Degree of Law within three years prior to the date of the notification.
       

Language Proficiency:

  • Should possess adequate knowledge to read, write, and speak in English and Tamil.

  • Applicants who do not possess adequate knowledge in Tamil may apply but should pass the Second Class Language Test in Tamil within the probation period if selected.
     

Key Points:

  • Candidates must upload all required certificates at the time of submission of the online application.

  • Applicants claiming any reservation must upload relevant certificates to support their claims.

Scheme of Examination for Tamil Nadu Judiciary

The scheme of examination for the Tamil Nadu Civil Judge exam includes three successive stages:

1. Preliminary Examination (Objective Type):

  • Duration: 3 hours

  • Maximum Marks: 100

  • Minimum Marks for a Pass:

    • SCs, SC(A)s, and STs: 30 Marks

    • MBCs/DCs, BC(OBCMs), and BCMs: 35 Marks

    • Others: 40 Marks
       

  • The Preliminary Examination consists of one paper containing 100 multiple-choice questions based on the syllabus given below.
     

  • Each question carries one mark, and 0.10 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.

  • The papers will be set in both English and Tamil.
     

  • The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination will not be counted for determining the final order of merit but are used for shortlisting candidates for the Main Examination.
     

2. Main Examination (Descriptive Type):

  • Translation Paper: 3 hours, 100 marks

  • Law Paper-I: 3 hours, 100 marks

  • Law Paper-II: 3 hours, 100 marks

  • Law Paper-III: 3 hours, 100 marks

  • Minimum Marks:

    • SCs, SC(A)s, and STs: 30%

    • MBCs/DCs, BC(OBCMs), and BCMs: 35%

    • Others: 40%

  • Translation Paper: Translation of passages from English to Tamil and from Tamil to English (passages will be from Pleadings, Depositions, Orders, Judgments, and Documents).
     

3. Viva-Voce Test:

  • Maximum Marks: 60

  • Minimum Marks for a Pass: 18
     

Preparation of Selection List:

  • The final selection will be based on the total marks obtained in the Main Examination and Viva-Voce Test.
